A solitary inn in Joshinetsu Kogen National Park at Hoshi Onsen, said to have been discovered by the Buddhist saint Kobo Daishi. Founded in 1875, the Meiji-era main building and the 1895 bathhouse 'Hoshi no Yu' were designated as nationally registered tangible cultural properties in 2006. The inn's signature is its rare 'ashimoto-wakidashi' (foot-welling) hot spring, where water naturally bubbles up through the stones.
